What is the NDECC™ The Modified Skill Examination?

In 2022, the existing ACS will be replaced by the NDECCTM.

On October 29, the NDEB announced that the current format of the ACS examination would be replaced by a modified skills examination known as the National Dental Examination of Clinical Competence™ or NDECC™, for short.

The first NDECC™ exam will be held in June 2022 at the NDEB’s new testing facility in Ottawa, Ontario, and will be given multiple times a week throughout the year.

The NDECC™ exam will take place over two days, with clinical skills on the first day and situational judgment on the second day. The NDECC™ can be taken an unlimited amount of times in a five-year period (60 months).

A complete list of equipment, materials, and supplies provided by the NDEB will be released in a practical guide soon. You can bring your own protective eyewear and dental loupes. A disposable gown will also be provided.

There have been notable changes to the typodonts, teeth, and handpieces (Kavo) used during this exam. Therefore, pay close attention to the lists provided by the NDEB.

The purpose of the NDECCTM is to assess the clinical competence of dentists trained in non-accredited programs. During the two-day examination, you will perform seven clinical requirements on simulated patients (manikins) in a clinical setting and 10 situational judgement requirements.

The NDECCTM  will be administered in the new NDEB® Test Centre located in Ottawa, ON. The examination will be offered multiple times a week throughout the year. The first examination is expected to be offered in June 2022.

The NDECCTM can be taken an unlimited number of times in a 60 month period.

Component 1: Clinical Skills

·        Class II amalgam preparation
·        Class II amalgam restoration
·        Class II composite restoration
·        Class IV composite restoration
·        Crown preparation
·        Provisional restoration

*The provisional restoration will be fabricated on the examinee’s crown preparation.

·        Endodontic access cavity preparation

The requirements assess clinical skills and techniques relevant to current Canadian standards.

You must perform all requirements as if you were working with actual patients.

  • You are required to use your judgment and follow accepted clinical care guidelines and standards.
  • Requirements can be performed in any order. Infection control and safety will be assessed by invigilators throughout the clinical skills day.

Component 2: Situational Judgement

Patient-centred Care

Examples: Assess caries risk, Manage patients’ needs, Gather data, Develop a problem list, Establish diagnoses, Sequence treatment, Plan treatment, Maintain records

Professionalism

Examples: Respond to ethical dilemmas, Manage referrals, Use social media appropriately

Communication and Collaboration

Examples: Maintain privacy, Maintain records, Write a referral, Write a lab prescription, Discuss treatment, Document informed consent, Demonstrate cultural competence, Interact with staff, Give post-op instructions

Practice and Information Management

Examples: Manage patient records, Follow protocols, Make evidence-based decisions

Health Promotion

Examples: Demonstrate an understanding of social determinants of health, Promote access to care for all individuals, Promote measures to prevent oral disease/injury, Advocate for patients

The situational judgement component assesses the judgement required for solving problems in work‑related situations.

You will be assessed on 10 situational judgement scenarios dealing with competency in Patient-Centered Care, Professionalism, Communication and Collaboration, Practice and Information Management and Health Promotion.

The scenarios in the above table are examples and do not reflect all situations that can be assessed.

The exam will be held at the NDECCTM Test Centre located at 340 Albert St. 12th Floor Ottawa, ON. The Test Centre is located:

  • a 4-minute walk from the O-train Lyon station
  • 4 km from the Ottawa train station
  • 11 km from the Ottawa airport

At the Test Centre, you will have access to an examinee locker room, examinee lounge including kitchen, an examinee private room for prayer, breastfeeding, meditation, etc., washrooms, a classroom, situational judgement rooms, and the simulation clinic.

You should wear comfortable professional streetwear. A disposable surgical gown to wear on top of your clothes will be provided. Closed-toed shoes with socks must be worn. For the health and comfort of examinees and staff, the Test Centre is a scent-free environment. We request that you avoid scented products such as cologne, aftershave, perfume, and scented lotion. The use of scented deodorant is permitted.

The Test Centre will be equipped with A-dec simulators and Kilgore International, Inc. Darwin heads.

The handpieces used in the Test Centre will be Kavo handpieces. The handpieces are air-driven.

You will be provided with all the necessary equipment, materials, and instruments for your examination.

You are permitted to bring your lunch, snacks, drinks, medications (if pre-approved), and menstrual products. You must provide your own protective eyewear. Dental surgical loupes are permitted. You must also bring the NDECC™ card provided at registration

If during your exam you leave the Test Centre, even to return to reception , you will not be permitted back into the Test Centre to complete your exam.
